Constructivism is one way to understanding child development and learning. The theory is that people learn by constructing their own understanding, based on many factors including: sensory experiences, prior knowledge, thoughts and emotions, and social relationships.
Accepting the complexity of learning means not trying to simplify our understanding of other people’s learning journeys. Stacey believes that the best way to teach is to foster relationships. She listens/pays attention to the learner, tries to take their perspective, and from there tailors her teaching/tutoring to match their understanding.
Jean Piaget was the psychologist and educational theorist who developed Constructivism. Lev Vygotsky was another constructivist psychologist; he developed Social Constructivism.
